In January 1961, James Meredith, who was black sent out an application to the University of Mississippi but was denied because of his race and the color of his skin. James Meredith took his case to court.1962, and the U.S. Supreme Court said he had the right to send an application to any school no matter what the color of his skin was. but later The Governor of Mississippi Ross Barnett, personally blocked Mr. Meredith from registering at the university even after the Supreme Court said he could. -
