13 African American and civil rights activist went on freedom rides. This was a bus trip in the south to protest bus segregation. -
Violence in Birmingham
A large amount of riots throughout Alabama protesting segration laws . These riots caused many children and adults to be attacked by police dogs and sprayed by fire hoses. -
March on Washington
Over 200,000 Americans gathered for a political rally know as the March on Washington. The event was to speak about the political and social challenges African Americans were facing. -
Civil Rights Act of 1964
Ended segregation in public places and banned employment discrimination. This act was purposed by president John F. Kennedy. -

This event was a 18 day march that became violent. The march was to focus effort on registering African Americans to receive full voting rights. -
Voting Rights Act of 1965
The act was signed into law on this date by president Lyndon Johnson. The right banned the discriminatory voting practices. -
Watts Riots
Marquette Frye was pulled over and arrested for suspicion of DUI. This act started a six day rage which caused over 40,000,000 dollars worth of property damage. -

The Woodstock festival was a music and arts festival that attracted 400,000 people from the popular counterculture known as the hippies. -
Feminists Movement
There was a struggle and fight for the ratification of the ERA. Women gathered in cities around the world for the 15th anniversary of the 19th amendment and went on strike. -
Roe v. Wade
The case was scheduled to be re-argued. This was a landmark decision about the issue of abortion.
