  • Executive Order 9981

    President Harry S. Truman issed the Executive Order 9981 meant to abolish racial discrimination in the United States Armed Forces. This later led to the segregation of the Armed Forces
  • Brown v. the Board of Education

    In the Brown v. Board of Education case, the Supreme court agreed that segregated public schools were unconstitutional. This overturned the "separate but equal" Plessy v. Ferguson case of 1896. Later, Thurgood Marshall would return to the Supreme court as the first African American justice.
  • Emmett Till

    Emmett Till, a 14 year old boy from Chicago, was visiting family in Mississippi and was kidnapped, beaten, shot, and dumped in the Tallahatichie River all for whistling at a white woman. J.W. Milam and Roy Bryant, both white males, were arrested and tried with an all white jury. The men later bragged about the murder in an interview with Look magazine.
  • Rosa Parks and the bus boycotts

    Rosa Parks refused to give up er seat for a white passenger, which went against the southern tradition during this time. Because of her arrest, the black community of Montgomery, Alabama, led many bus boycotts that lasted for more than a year.
  • The SCLC

    Created by Martin Luther King, Charles K. Steele, and Fred L. Shuttlesworth, the Southern Christian Leadership Conference was established for organizing civil rights movements and was based of the beliefs of civil disobedience and nonviolence.
  • the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee

    Founded at Shaw University, the SNCC was around to give young people and college students a chance to be apart of the civil rights movements under the leadership of Stokely Carmichael.
  • Hamilton Holmes and Charlayne Hunter

    Hamilton Holmes and Charlayne Hunter were the first African Americans to be admitted to the University of Georgia. They originally were supposed to be admitted in the winter but didn't get in due to lack of space. Hamilton was accepted into Morehouse college but still resubmitted his application to try to get in. Once the pair got in there were many protests and riots around the school. Many teachers threatened to quit if the pair didn't get in.
  • First Blacks in University of Georgia

    Hamilton Homes and Charlayne Hunter were the firts Africsn Americans to attend the University of Georgia. Many riots broke out in front of Hunter's dorm.
  • Freedom Riders

    Willing students would take bus trips through the south to test out
  • Allbany Movement

    The Albany Movement's purpose was to desegregate the entire city of Albany and other surounding cities. The SCLC and the SNCC also helped to supprt this movement. Martin Luther King Jr. thought it wasnt successful but Albany residents thought it had a major effect on the community.
