A group of 9 African Americans enrolled in an “all white” high school. The governor of Arkansas forbade them from attending the school because it was segregated. -

First civil rights federal legislation passed by the US congress since 1875. The act helped provide further guidelines for the sustainability and protection of people within the States. -
Greensboro, NC sit ins
Nonviolent protests that took place in North Carolina from February to July, they took place primarily in the Woolworth store. The sit in spread to many college towns all across the South. -
Freedom Riders
A group of civil rights activists who would ride interstate buses into segregated areas in the south. They challenged racial lay by refusing to abide by the laws that say that blacks have to sit in the back of the bus. This ended December 10, 1961. -
Letter from Birmingham Jail
This was a letter Dr. King wrote while he was in jail after he was arrested at a nonviolent protest. In this letter he tells the african american population that they must stick with nonviolent tactics to help them win their battle. This letter helped a lot of people to not lose hope because if Dr. King could still have hope from jail then so could they. -
March on Washington "I have a dream" speech
The “I have a dream” speech was given by MLK Jr during the March on Washington. In the speech he gave he called for civil and economic rights for african american people, and to end racism in the States. -
24th Amendment
This amendment prohibits congress and the states from conditioning voting rights in any federal elections on payment of poll or any other tax form. Now the citizens that originally had to pay a tax to vote could vote freely in any election. -

This act outlawed the discrimination of race, religion, sex, or national orign. It prohibits unequal registration of voter restrictions and racial segregation in any of the schools, employment areas, and public areas. -

This act outlawed any existing discriminatory voting practices that mainly the south had adopted during the civil war. This helped officially ban all existing racism and discriination in the voting system. -

This was a political organization founded on the outline of “self defense”, it was revolutionary with an ideology of black nationalism, socialism, and armed self defense for black. -
American Indian Movement (AIM)
This organization was formed in urban areas to bring attention to the systemic issue of poverty and police brutality against the Native Americans. They protested racism and civil rights violations that were against the Native American community. -
MLK Jr assassinated
Dr. King was killed by James Earl Ray, during this MLK was supporting a black sanitation worker strike for better pay and working conditions. His assisnation lead to a wave of anger within the African American community along with a long period of mourning. -
