    William Hartsfield

    William Hartsfield served six terms, longer than any other GA mayor. He made Atlanta more modern, and developed it greatly. He helped the construction of many buildings, parks, made the general Assembly organize a new budget system, and didn't believe in racial violence. Atlanta became "A city to busy to hate". During his time, the Sibley commission occured.

    Ellis Arnall

    Ellis Arnall did many things within his 4 year term as the governor. He fixed certification issues with UGA and during his span as governor, GA was the first State to have sufferage from 18+. Many felt he was to favorable towards the race problem and civil right acts..
  • Who should be Governor?!

    Eugene Talmadge dies begining a quarell for governor between Ellis Arnall (lietenant governor) and Herman Talmadge. Because E. Talmage was getting old, many began putting his son's name in their votes. E talmadge won he passed away before he got into office, they decided to appoint Herman. And after this whole quarell, the Supreme court came in with their role of breaking conflitcts and called for a re election. Herman Talmadge won and became governor in 1947.

    Korean War

    Primary Document report on Truman's national security council.The Korean war was a war fought right after WW2. After the division into communist North and democratic South, North Korea invaded its neighboring south. The United Nations found this unacceptable and with other allied powers still crippled from war, it was upto the US to defend South Korea.
    After a little more than 3 years, there was peace with a neutral winner. In the war there were 25,000 American losses and buisnessmen benifeted greatly from doing buisness with military bases/armed forces.

    Right before the Civil War started, GA had no official state flag. And even aftering leaving the Union, it had a simple star on a white flag. And it had many more changes happening, but in 1856 the GA flag had a confederate symbol on it. But since it didnt feel very appropriate for a state flag, many refused to fly it. Even for the 1996 olympics, the General Assembly just wouldnt give way and change it from the Confederate Battle flag.
  • Sibley Commission

    Governor Vandiver had a choice to close down all public schools or to rid them of segregation (desegrate). The choice was to be made after the sueing and supreme ruling of the Brown vs Board of Education issue (where a white's only school following the seperate but equal acts was to be attended by a black 3rd grade girl after a Supreme Ct. ruling). But before the Assembly could act, Hamilton and Charlyne, both blacks were to attened UGA. (Continued on next event)
  • Sibbley Commission(2)

    The governor immediately closed UGA, but a federal judge reversed the decision. Soon Vandiver past some bills along with the Sibley commission which desegrated schools.

    Albany Movement

    Helped with the Civil rights by desegrating a whole community after putting more than 1,000 africans behind bars including M.L.K. while protesting. After this failure, he suceeded in helping with desegration in Birmingham, Al.although King had failed in Albany, GA, it led to a successful high votes to blacks in politics.

    Ivan Allen Jr. Mayor of Atlanta

    Ivan Allen Jr. introduced 3 of the majoreleague sports teams after buying them from various states. These were the Falcons NFL:1966, Hawks NBA:1968, and BravesMLB:1966. Ivan Allen Jr. also progressed in desegrating GA. by his term, 40% of GA was desegregated. GA. as well as establishing areas and modernizing GA.

    Carl Sanders

    Carl E. Sanders InterviewCarl Sanders was the governor of Georgia through 1963-67. He helped to resolve racial violence. He also invested much into education and his ads included those that were aired on T.V. While his term was going on, the racial protest led by Martin Luther King Jr. was held. It is best known as March on Washington. Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee (SNCC) was involved along with many other protest grps

    Racial violence and unequality protest best known as March on Washington occurred. Led by Martin Luther King and other leaders as well as the involvment of many protest grps including the SNCC. This March was against J.F.Kennedy, and white supremisists such as the KKK. Many gave speeches that day including King and a representetive named Lewis from the SNCC.

    Lester Maddox

    Lester Maddox interviewLestor Maddox was the record breaking governor at that time for appointing the most African Americans to office, Infact he appointed more blacks than all the previous governors combined. He introduced "People's Days" where anyone could go see the governor.

    First Black Mayor of Atlanta

    Maynard Jackson became the first African American to be mayor of Atlanta. He succeeded Andrew Young (who had began the start of black political power and helped poor lower class African Americans) and was also first to be mayor of a major southern city. He, Young and many others worked hard to bring in the 1996 olympic games to GA. He lessened the mistreatments on African americans by the police to help the blacks rise ranks. After running his 2-term limit, he let Andrew Young run for mayor.
  • Benajmin May Dies

    Throughout his life, Benjamin Mays contributed much to the civil rights acts and fair treatment to blacks. As an african american himself, his life was tough dealing with white supremisists. He became president of morehouse college and wrote many essays during that time. One of his more famous works is Seeking to Be a Christian in Race Relations which he published in the late 50's.
