    In the 1950's, schools were segregated by race. The Brown family believed that the school was violated the Fourteenth Amendment and they took the case to court. So they were awarded that blacks could go to the same schools as whites.
  • Murder of Emmet Till

    Murder of Emmet Till
    Accused of whistling at a white woman. 3 days later Roy Bryant and others kidnapped, took an ear, a ear, and strapped to a heavy fan at the bottom of a river with barbed wire.
  • Rosa Parks

    Rosa Parks
    Rosa is arrested for failing to move seats. She is fined 10 dollars. MLK Jr amd church sends flyers to boycott the bus system. After 381 days the supreme court rled buses to not be segregated.
  • Southern Christian Leadership Conference

    Southern Christian Leadership Conference
    A meeting of black church pastors to coordinate events for black people. MLK was elected first president. Used a nonviolent strategy. Also registered blacks to vote, opposed vietnam war and wanted better jobs for blacks.
  • Little Rock 9

    Little Rock 9
    9 student wanted to go to the white school. The governor
    of Arkansas call out the national guard to stop them. Pres. Eisenhower calls in 1200 troops to escort the students from home to class. 1959 all schools are integrated.
  • The Greensboro sit ins.

    The Greensboro sit ins.
    Four college students sat in protest at a whites only bar in Greensboro, North Carolina. They took turns and protested all day. Later, more people started to protest for their rights.
  • Freedom Riders

    Freedom Riders
    Teams of African Americans and white volunteers to travel into the South to draw attention to its refusal to integrate bus terminals. They rode on the interstate buses to challenge the United States. At first, there was only minor encounters, but eventually, they were beaten.
  • March on Washington

     March on Washington
    250,000 people marched in Washington D.C. It was peaceful and respectful protest for jobs and freedom. MLK gave his “I Have a Dream” speech. He was the last speaker of the day.
  • Civil Rights Act of 1964

    Civil Rights Act of 1964
    Enabled the federal government to prevent racial discrimination and segregation based on race, color, religion and national origin in private businesses or public facilities.
  • Malcom X

    Malcom X
    Civil Rights leader who was part of the Nation of Islam. He wanted black people to believe in themselves and start their own businesses. He was shot 21 times. Thomas Hagan convicted of killing.
  • Selma

    Selma
    Black Marchers wanted to walk 54 miles to Montgomery to register to vote. At the Edmond Bridge troopers brutally beat them.
  • Voting Rights Act of 1965

    Voting Rights Act of 1965
    Ending the right to vote of African American any discrimination in voting. Now a federal matter not state.
  • MLK

    MLK
    Striking Sanitation workers protest in Memphis. They went back to the motel. MLK was shot in the lower right of his face with a rifle. James Earl Ray was sentenced to 19 years in prison. His death was marked as the end of the civil rights movement.
