Benjamin Mays
He is best known as the longtime president of Morehouse College, however he also mentored civil rights activist Martin Luther King Jr. Mays also filled a leadership role in several significant national and international organizations, among them the NAACP, and the YMCA. -
1946 Governor's Race
When Eugene Talmadge died before inauguration as governor in 1946, Melvin thompson was supposed to be put into office according to the constitution, because he was currently lieutenant governor. However, during the election Herman Talmadge was written in on ballots and was runner up to his father Eugene Talmage so peole were saying that he should be governor. The governor at the time, Ellis Arnall, refused to leave office until the situation was sorted out. This resulted in three governors. -
Herman Talmage
Herman Talmadge, son of Eugene Talmadge, served as governor of Georgia after his father died. When he was elected, his name was not on the ballot. Georgians wrote his name in a blank spot on the ballot and he was runner up to his father. After his father died before inauguration, Herman Talmadge was elected governor. -

1956 State Flag
This flag was meant to how resistance toward integrating schools and other things in Georgia. It was introduced in 1955 and it was easily accpeted among the General Assembly. -

Sibley Commission
In 1960, governor Ernest Vandiver Jr was forced to decide between closing schools and integrating them. The Sibley Commission was set up to guage Georgia's oppinion on desegregtion of schools. -

Albany Movement
It was the first mass movement in the modern civil rights era to have as its goal the desegregation of an entire community. It resulted in the jailing of over 1,000 African- Americans. -
Hamilton Holmes and Charlayne Hunter
The first two african american students to be admitted into the University of Georgia. Two years later, Homes became the first african american to be admitted into the Emory University School of Medicine in Atlanta. -
The March on Washington
The event was meant to show the political and social challenges African Americans faced across the country, even though they were supposed to be equal with all americans. The march became a key moment during the struggle for civil rights and included Martin Luther King jr's famous "I Have a Dream" speech. -
Civil Rights Act
The Civl Rights act of 1964 banned segregation in public places and banned employment discrimination based on race, color, or gender. In later years, Congress expanded the act and also passed additional legislation aimed at bringing more equality to African Americans. -
Maynard Jackson
Maynard Jackson was first African mayor of Atlanta He served three terms and died in 2003. As mayor, one of Jackson's main priorities was to ensure that minority businesses received more municipal contacts
