  • Plessy v. Ferguson

    Plessy appealed, claiming that he had been denied equal protection under the law. Plessy claimed that, being "of mixed descent," he was entitled to "eery recognition, right, privilege and immuntity secured to the citizens of the United States of the white race."
  • Race Riots

    Black people were not treated fairly.
  • Brown v. Board of Education of Topeka

    It was unconstitutional for black and white students to go to seperate schools.
  • Montgomery Bus Boycott

    Rosa Parks was arrested on a bus when she refused to give up her seat for a white man. Many people rioted by not riding buses.
  • Little Rock School Integration

    Nine black kids went to an all white school and mobs were trying to harm the kids. State troops had to come in and protect the kids from getting hurt. Soldiers walked the black kids to each class.
  • The Sit-Ins

    Four black students sat at a counter reserved for white people and they resfused to move. Many black people were inspired by this and started to sit-in all over the counrty.
  • Freedom Rides

    People rode buses in order to challenge racial segregation.

  • March on Birmingham, Alabama

    Rioters were sprayed by fire hoses and were attacked by police dogs. Kids march to the downtown area and protested until arrested.
  • March on Washington

    Many Americans marched to Washington D.C to hear MLK speak about racial justice and equality.
  • 24th Amendment

    It prohibited any poll tax in elections for federal officials.
  • Civil Rights Act of 1964

    Ended segregation in public places and banned employment discrimination.
  • Voting Rights Act of 1965

    It eliminated literacy tests.
  • March from Selma to Montgomery for voting rights

    It was a Civil Rights March.
