    WPC Boycott Organization

    Throughout this time period, the Womens Political Council advocated for an integrated public transportation system. The council organized a boycott and warned the city that it may occur if things did not change. The council also organized meetings to plan the bus boycott during this time.
  • Claudette Colvin's Arrest

    Claudette Colvin was arrested for refusing to give up her bus seat to a white man and was arrested at the age of 15. Although this event did not have the same outrage as Rosa Parks, it caused growing ressitance within the black community. This planted the seeds for the boycotts that would later occur.
  • Mary Louise Smith's Arrest

    Mary Louise Smith was arrested for a similar reason to Claudette Colvin and had similar results. This continued the growing resentment toward the segregated montgomery bus system.
  • Rosa Parks' Arrest

    NAACP activist Rosa Parks was arrested for refusing to give her seat to a white man. Following the arrest, a meeting was held to organize a one day boycott on December 5.
  • Leaflet Distribution by WPC

    Jo Ann Robinson and the WPC printed and distributed thousands of leaflets that spread word of the boycott on December 5. This grew in popularity and led to the indefinite Montgomery Bus Boycott.
  • Holt Street Baptist Church Meeting

    A meeting was held at Holt Street Baptist Church by the Montgomery Improvement Association (MIA) where Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. spoke. This pushed people to continue the boycott indefinitely.

    Montgomery Bus Boycott

    This boycott lasted for over one year and the organizers assisted the participants with carpooling systems, informational meetings, and legal action against the city. Eventually the city was forced to end segregation within the bus system.
