Born in Ninety Six, South Carolina, was the mentor of Martin Luther King Jr as well as a civil rights activist himself. He spoke out against inequality, and was heavily influenced by the teachings of Ghandi. -
Martin Luther King Jr. Born
Martin Luther King Jr. was a civil rights activist, pastor, and humanitarian. He famously gave the "I have a dream" speech, as well as led many other nonviolent protests such as the Montgomery Bus Boycott. He learned from Benjamin Mays, and was also influenced by Ghandi. -

The courts ruled that the "Democratic White Primary" was unconstitutional and violated the 14th amendment. -

SNCC begins
The SNCC, which followed in MLKJ's footsteps, was a non-violent civil rights organization. Led by young activists such as Julian Bond, it had sit-ins at lunch counters and urged Blacks to register to vote. -
Sibley Commission
Gov. Vandiver created a commission to gather the population's opinions on desegregation. The commission found that the people had very split decisions. State laws punishing integrated schools were removed, and schools were allowed to make their own decisions on integration. -
UGA desegregated
UGA was ordered to be integrated, and Charlayne Hunter and Hamilton Holmes were the first African Americans to attend UGA, despite massive protesting -

Albany Movement
NAACP and SNCC worked to desegregate all places in Albany, Georgia. They recruited MLKJ, but the movement did not succeed, mainly because they attempted too much and did not focus on any one type of segregation. -
March on Washington
Over 250000 people participated in a great protest demanding equal rights. Led by, among others, MLKJ, where he gave his famous "I have a Dream" speech. -
Civil Rights Act
After a 75-day filibuster, the Civil Rights Act was passed, eliminating all discrimination based on race or sex. Signed by Lyndon B. Johnson. -
MLK Awarded Nobel Peace Prize
It was awarded for his nonviolent protests against inequality. -
Lester Maddox elected governor
Despite closing his restaurant rather than comply with desegregation, Lester Maddox employed more blacks than any previous GA governor, and helped with prison reform. -

Andrew Young elected to House
Noted Civil Rights activist and friend of MLKJ was elected to the House of Representatives, the first Black member. -
Maynard Jackson elected governor
Maynard Jackson, the first Black governor of GA, was elected. At that time, Blacks had just reached a majority in Atlanta.
