  • Brown Vs Board of Edu.

    Nine African American students were enrolled and not allowed to enter the Little Rock High School because of their race. The United States Supreme Court unauthorized a state law to separate public schools for black and white students and this ruling established an equal opportunity and major victory for the civil rights movement.

    Rose Parks, an African American woman was arrested for refusing to give up her seat to a white person on a Montgomery bus. The boycott lasted for 2 weeks and the Supreme Court ruled to legally integrate black with the white people.

    John Milton Yinger originated the words "Counter Culture" in his article in the 60's called"American Sociological Review". Counter Culture may or may not fit politically but definitely involved criticism, rejection, or acceptance into the mainstream. Hippies was moved in the 60's including music with the vibrant electric, psychedelic version of rock and the peace sign was well known.

    Latino Movement

    Also called "Chicano Civil Rights Movement" in the 60's. The Civil Rights Movement goals of the Mexican American to gain empowerment. Cesar Chavez was a Mexican American and a union leader and civil rights activist in the 60's. He cofounded "National Farm Workers Association in 1962 and united with Agricultural Workers Organizing Committee in 1966.

    Betty Friedan, American writer, activist, and feminist who wrote a book "The Feminist Mystique 1963" and also founder of the National Organization for Women. She was one of the most influential feminist leader in the 60"s.

    Martin Luther King Jr. a Baptist minister who believed in his Christian beliefs of non violent civil rights. He helped organized the March on Washington 1963 where he gave his speech "I Have a Dream" and was assassinated later years by James Earl Ray.

    Malcolm X real name was Malcolm Little was an African American Muslim minister and a human rights activist. He was assassinated by a rival black Muslims during his speech in Washington.

    President Lyndon Johnson signed "Voting Rights Law" to have the African American equal rights to vote. It is written in the Constitution of the United States Amendment 15
  • Black Power

    Few of the African American, like Newton and Seale were harassed by police and Newton was jailed for killing a policeman. Bobby Seale was the co founder of ther Black Panther for Self Defense with Newton. The upraise of the Black Power Movement like Martin Luther King Jr. responded to this injustice society by non violent protest using his powerful speech
  • Bilingual Education Act

    Bilingual Education Act
    It is the first official federal recognition of needs of students with limited English ability. The Title VII of elementary and Secondary Education Act provide education programs. Civil rights activist argued the rights of minority language students were violated for not recognizing them. The government would provide financial assistance and funding for development of the program.
  • Feminist Movement

    Roe vs Wade, a well known controversy in the nation about a case regarding of a woman terminated her pregnancy by abortion. The Supreme Court granted woman's right for abortion with the right of privacy. This right is written under the Constitution of the United States amendment 14.
