    Harry Truman signs the issue to end segregation in the military.
  • Brown vs. Board of Education

    Brown vs. Board of Education
    Ended racial segregation in schools systems in Southern America. Did not really do much because schools remained segregated
  • Chicagoan Emmet Till

    Chicagoan Emmet Till
    Chicagoan Emmet Till was a fourteen year old black child. He was kidnapped, beaten, shot, and dumped in a river for whistling at a white women. This case blew up and only fueled the angry fire for protesters and activists.
  • Rosa Parks

    Rosa Parks
    She refused to give up her seat on a local bus for a white man. She was arrested and this started the Montgomery Bus Boycott
  • Montgomery Bus Boycott

    Montgomery Bus Boycott
    This was a year long protest of the bus system in Alabama. No body would ride buses to support the cause and eventually led to end of segregation on buses. This boycott was led by Martin Luther King and gave him the title of the unofficial leader of the Civil Rights Movement.

    Nine African American students were not let into Central High School in Arkansas. Since this was against the law, Eisenhower sent troops down to escort them into school
  • Greensboro Event

    Greensboro Event
    Four students did not get up from a segregated table in a restaurant. This started many sit-ins across the country. These were non-violent protests
  • Executive Order 10925

    Executive Order 10925
    Kennedy signed this order. It ended discrimination in government hiring based on race, gender, ethnicity
  • James Meredith

    James Meredith
    James Meredith was the first African American to enroll at the University of Mississippi. Kennedy sent 5,000 troops down to protect Meredith and hold back riots.
  • March on Washington

    March on Washington
    250,000 people took part in this peaceful protest. Wanted jobs and freedom for African Americans. Martin Luther King gave his famous "I have a dream" speech here.
  • Bombing of 16th Street

    Bombing of 16th Street
    A bomb goes off at 16th Street Baptists Church in Birmingham. Kills four young girls and injures many others.
  • Civil Rights Act of 1964

    Civil Rights Act of 1964
    Lyndon B. Johnson signs the Civil Rights Act of 1964. This prevents employment discrimination. You cannot be turned away because of your race, sex, or religion.
  • Malcolm X is Killed

    Malcolm X is Killed
    Malcolm X is killed by members of the Nation of Islam.
  • Voting Rights Act of 1965

    Voting Rights Act of 1965
    Johnson signs the Voting Rights Act of 1965. This takes away literacy tests as a requirement for voting.

    Martin Luther King is Killed
    Martin Luther King was killed on his hotel balcony by James Earl Ray.

    Fair Housing Act
    This was also known as the Civil Rights Act of 1968. Gave equal housing opportunities to everyone no matter what race you were. President Johnson signed it and passed it.

    President Nixon came up with the Philadelphia Order. Showed his goals for equal employment opportunities for everyone.
  • Restoration Act

    Restoration Act
    Congress passed the Restoration Act. Expanded nondiscrimination laws to private businesses.
