The Southern Christian Leadership Conference was established by Martin Luther King
The beginings of the SCLC can be found at the Montgomory Bus Boycott, the biggest non-violent protest ever and the start of the Civil rights movement. Still, further organization was needed for the movement to succead. The answer was the Southern Christian Leadership Conference. -
Freedom Riders
Student volunteers called “freedom riders” begin testing state laws prohibiting segregation on buses and railways stations. During their long voyage from Washington DC to New Orleans they were subject to verbal insults and violence. They never made it to New Orleans because the violence got so bad, espically in the Alabama citys of Anniston and Birmingham. -
Letter from Birmingham Jail
After getting arrested for Civil rights demonstarations, King got a letter from fellow Clergymen telling him to stop leading the Civil rights movement. King responded in one of the most famous letters of the Civil rights movement. It has a compelling defense for both non-violent protest and civil rights alike. -
Civil Rights act of 1964
After 300 years of segregation and a tireless effort by reformers a bill was finally passed that made everything truly equal. -
Voting Rights Act of 1965 is approved
For several years the Jim Crow laws had made it almost impossible for African-Americans to vote and get things fixed but after this bill passed the Jim Crow laws were nullified. Voting was also now an equal thing for all races.
