  • Invention of the Computer

    Invention of the Computer
    Charles Babbage is credited with inventing the first computer in 1822. However, it wasn't built until 1991. Babbage worked on the analytical engine for almost 40 years. This mechanical computer could perform simple calculations. The first electronic general-purpose digital computer was the ENIAC, which was built in 1945. It filled an entire room. The first personal computer was the Micral N, which was built in 1973. Alan Turing is credited with inventing computer science.

    Electronic television was first successfully demonstrated in San Francisco on Sept. 7, 1927. The system was designed by Philo Taylor Farnsworth, a 21-year-old inventor who had lived in a house without electricity until he was 14.

    Bluetooth was invented by Dr. Jaap Haartsen at Ericsson in 1994. The goal was to find short-range radio connections to improve the functionality of mobile phones. The first Bluetooth specifications were released in July 1999. The Bluetooth Special Interest Group (SIG) was formed in 1998 to develop and promote the technology.
