Sony Released the PS2
Sony Released the PS2 and it became the Best selling console in the world, a record which still stands today. This success was due to it costing barely more than the DVD Players at that time and had the added benefit of playing movies or Video Games. This also helped push the DVD Format to make it far more mainstream. -
ITunes is Released.
Apple released ITunes, a media player and media management tool that allowed people that had a Mac (Though it did come to windows) to rip music off of CD's, Mix them, and then Burn them to a Blank CD. -
Amazon Web Services (AWS) lanches Cloud Services.
Amazon introduced Web services Elastic Cloud 2 (EC2) and Simple Storage Service (S3). EC2 allowed users to Rent time on the cloud to run Server specific tasks, while only charging companies for what was used. this made it so there was less space taken up by servers at a business. S3 was Amazon's File hosting service and inspired services such as Google Drive. -
Blu-ray Optical Disks are developed
Blu-ray Optical Disks was created by Sony and was meant to be a successor to the DVD. At the time, DVD's were only able to display at 480p, where Blu-ray was designed to store high definition video at 1080p. This was done by using a Blue Laser, compared to DVD's Red Laser, that was able to read data stored at a higher density. Blu-ray was also in a battle with HD DVD (Created by Toshiba) and ultimately won that battle. -
Bitcoin is Created
Satoshi Nakamoto created Bitcoin which is a Peer-to-Peer Electronic Cash System. This is used to generate a crypto-currency. With Bitcoin, users run software that searches for blocks of data, when that is discovered it rewards the users with Bitcoins. This De-Centralized Currency makes it so that transactions are anonymous.
