    Significant Computer inventions (for gamers)

    Since I am a nerd, I decided to do a timeline on Game Consoles (which are still computer advancements, in fact pretty big ones). People around the world were amazed by game consoles and it brought a big perspective on the entertainment side of computers. (I got my information from worldhistoryproject.org)
  • Nintendo SNES

    Nintendo SNES
    The SNES released in Japan and south Korea in 1990, North America in 1991, Europe and Oceania in 1992, and South America in 1993. It sold 23.35 million units in North America, 17.17mil in Japan, and 8.58mil overall everywhere else, have a net of 49.1 million units sold worldwide. Fun Fact: In Japan it was known as the Super Famicon (SFC). (I just put January 2nd because I could not find a specific date and so it was under my title).
  • The Neo Geo

    The Neo Geo
    Made by the company SNK and released in Japan, the Neo Geo was a cartridge-based arcade and home video game system. The Neo Geo and Neo Geo CD combined had sold 980,000 units,In 2009, the Neo Geo was ranked 19th out of the 25 best video game consoles of all time by video game website IGN.
  • Sega Game Gear

    Sega Game Gear
    Released by Sega in Japan, the Game Gear was Sega's attempt at besting Nintendo's Game Boy system. Sega was not successful in besting the Game Boy but still sold 10.63 million units (the game boy got around 10 times that amount)
  • Sega CD

    Sega CD
    The Segs CD was an add-on device for the Sega Genesis, the device adds a CD-ROM drive to the Genesis, allowing the user to play CD-based games and providing additional hardware functionality. In addition, the add-on can also play audio CDs and CD+G discs. It was released in Japan in 1991, North America in 1992, and PAL regions in 1993. The Sega CD sold around 2.24 million units. (For the date same deal as the SNES)
  • Atari Jaguar

    Atari Jaguar
    The company Atari released the Atari Jaguar. Part of the fifth generation of video game consoles, it competed against the Sega Genesis and the SNES. Although it was promoted as the first 64-bit gaming system, the Jaguar proved to be a commercial failure and prompted Atari to leave the home video game console market, because of this, the Atari Jaguar had an overall of less than 150,000 unit sales worldwide.

    The Sega 32x, codenamed project mars, was yet another add-on for the Sega Genesis. With the release of the Super Famicom in Japan and the Super NES in North America, Sega felt the need to leapfrog Nintendo in the technological department. The Sega Mega-CD, known as Sega CD in North America, had not worked as well, in a business sense, as Sega had wanted it to. So, they made the Sega 32x. They unveiled it at the consumer electronics show and presented it as a low-cost option for 32-bit games.

    The Sega Saturn was released In Japan on November 22nd,1994, May 11th in North America, and July 8th, 1995. The Sega Saturn was a 32-bit console. The system was popular in Japan due to its successful marketing such as with the character Segata Sanshiro, but the system suffered in North America and Europe due to a poor launch, extensive competition from Sony's PlayStation and the Nintendo 64, difficulty to program by third parties, and marketing woes. The Sega Saturn sold 9.26 units worldwide.

    The PlayStation was released on December 3, 1994, in Japan, September 9, 1995, in North America, September 29, 1995, in Europe, and November 15, 1995, in Australia. It was a 32-bit 5th gen console. On March 31, 2005, the PlayStation and PS one reached a combined total of 102.49 million units shipped, becoming the first video game console to reach the 100 million mark.

    The Virtual Boy was a portable video game console released in 1995 by Nintendo. The system used a monochromatic (red and black) visor that simulated a 3D view on its games. It is noteworthy for being one of the few financially failed products of Nintendo. It was released on July 21, 1995, in Japan and August 14, 1995, in North America at a price of around US$180. It met with a lukewarm reception that was unaffected by continued price drops. Nintendo discontinued it the following year.

    The successor to the Super Nintendo Entertainment System, it was released on June 23, 1996, in Japan, on September 29, 1996, in North America, and March 1, 1997, in Europe and Australia. Of the consoles in the fifth generation, the Nintendo 64 was the latest contender and the most technologically advanced; however, N64's architecture had limitations which harmed the console's market competitiveness. The N64 sold 32.93 million units worldwide.

    The Dreamcast is a home video game console released by Sega on November 27, 1998, in Japan, September 9, 1999, in North America, and October 14, 1999, in Europe. It was the first in the sixth generation of video game consoles, preceding Sony's PlayStation 2, Nintendo's GameCube, and Microsoft's Xbox. The Dreamcast was Sega's final home console, marking the end of the company's eighteen years in the console market. The Dreamcast sold 9.13 million units worldwide.

The PlayStation 2 sold over 155 million units worldwide.
