On the ninth of June in 1914, Archduke Franz Ferdinand is assassinated by a secret nationalist group called the Black Hand. This serbian group was provoked to do this because of the annexation by Austria-Hungary and they believed strongly that the territories should be apart of Serbia. On Ferdinand's visit he and his wife Sophie are shot and killed by Gavrilo Princip. -

Sinking of the Lusitania- Why was it shot?
On the seventh of June in 1915, the Lusitania is attacked by Germany. Britain identified the Lusitania as a passenger boat but there were conflictions as to if that was correct because of the munitions abord. Germany warns Britain to tell the Lusitania to take an alternate route because they believed it to be an enemy boat and would fire against it. The boat continued to go in the warned area and was torpedoed. This is caused by Germany's drive for war but also Britain's lack of communication -

First Liberty Loan-What was a liberty loan?
On April 24, 1917 The United States congressed passed the act that used liberty bonds to help raise funds for the war effort. Secretary of treasury William Gibbs Mcadoo conceived the loans. Propaganda is utilized greatly to help support the bonds making them look as patriotic as possible. -

Selective Service Act- What did it do?
On May 18, 1917 congress passes Woodrow Wilson's act to ultimately get men into the war against Germany. This act forces all men between the ages of twenty one and thirty to register to enlist in the war. Before this act only approximately 100,000 men had signed up for the war but a few months after it's passed nearly 10 million men had registered. -

In World War 1 the government used propaganda to sell war bonds. It was used in 1917 to 1918 in order to raise money to fund for the war. The result if you brought a liberty bond you would be loaning the government money but later on after the war was over you would get the money back. After a certain amount of time you would even get paid back more because of interest. Woodrow Wilson took a big because it was in his presidency. -
