Birth and death of Christopher Columbus
Christopher Columbus was born between August 25 and October 31, 1451. He died May 20 1506. Nobody is sure where he was born. He is Italian. -
May 26, 1486
Columbus asks the spain rulers for funding for his exploration.
In1486, we dont know the date or month, Columbus asked Queen Isabella and King Ferdinand for funding and permission to go on his westward voyage to Asia. But they said no because they were in war with the North African Muslims and they didnt have enough money. Christopher said that he would be back to ask again sometime. -
May 26, 1492
Columbus asks again and this time they say yes.
When Columbus asked again 6 years later, they said yes because the war was over. Spain had won the reconquista and needed money. Queen Isabella and King Ferdinand hoped to make money by selling the gold, silks, and spices they believed Columbus would bring back to Spain. The King and Queen also wanted to spread Roman Catholicism. ( Ms.C we dont know the exact date he asked.) -

Columbus sets sail on his 1st exploration
Queen Isabella and King Ferdinand gave Columbus 3 ships, the Nina, The Pinta, and the Santa Maria. They also gave him 90 sailors. Also some food. They sailors didnt know where they were going and where they were going to land. -

A sailor on the Pinta see's land
Shortly after midnight on Oct. 12 a sailor on the Pinta saw land. The ships had arrived at an island that Columbus named San Salvador. Columbus thought this was India and named them Indians. The Tainol people traded with Columbus. After going there Columbus sailed to Cuba and Hispaniola before returning to Spain. -

After Columbus's first voyage he went to again to explore.
Columbus made three more voyages to the Carribean and the coasts of Central and south America.The Queen and King wanted him to start settlements. Also to search for gold. Columbus sailed 17 ships to the island of Hispaniola. Columbus also claimed more lands for Spain. Columbus gave the Indians cattle, pigs, sheep, horses, bananas, and coffee beans. The Indians traded corn, tomatoe, patotoe, squash, peanuts, and cacao but many Taino people got sick and died from European diesease. -

The third voyage of columbus from Seville, Spain, with 6 ships
The ships arrived at Godmera in the Canary islands on june 19. At this point the crew split into 2 squadrons: three ships sailed directly towards Hispaniola with supplies for colonists there; but the other 3 commanded by Columbus were on a mission of exploration trying to find any land southof the known islandsin the Indies.
