    The Asian islands near China and India were fabled for their spices and gold making them an attractive destination for Europeans. Since Muslim domination of the trade routes through the Middle East made travel eastward difficult, Columbus devised a route to sail west across the Atlantic to reach Asia believing it would be quicker and safer. He estimated the earth to be a sphere and the distance between the Canary Islands and Japan to be about 2,300 miles.

    When the ships landed in Spain on March 15, 1493, news of the successful voyage spread very quickly.Columbus made a triumphant journey to Barcelona to be received at the Spanish court. Ferdinand and Isabella loaded him with honors and even acted as godparents for two of the Indians who were baptized into the Christian faith.

    At the age of 53 years old and in very poor health, Columbus was suffering from malaria, arthritis, and a serious inflammation of both eyes. To add to his frustration, Queen Isabella, the person who had been the most helpful to his plans, sadly died on November 26, 1504.
