  • Abraham Darby

    In 1708, Darby had successfully refined his process to smelt iron in sand, and took a patent on the process. This opened the industry of iron smelting to more people because it was less costly than brass wires were.
  • Thomas Newcomen

    Thomas Newcomen created the first ever powered steam engine in 1712. This engine condensed steam to create a vacuum to pump water out of mines.
  • James Watt

    James Watt took out the famous patent for “A New Invented Method of Lessening the Consumption of Steam and Fuel in Fire Engines" in 1768. This was called a Separate Condenser. This part to the steam engine used less steam more efficiently than prior steam engines and allowed for cheaper and more efficient production.
  • Richard Arkwright

    In 1775 Arkwright thought of the idea of a horse driven spinning mill. This opened more mills where yarn could be processed.
  • Samuel Crompton

    Crompton invented the spinning mule in 1779, which allowed for a large scale production of high quality yearn and thread world wide.
  • Edmund Cartwright

    Cartwright created the first ever power loom in 1785. This invention sped up the process of making cloth and there for forwarded the cloth industry.
  • Nicolas LeBlanc

    LeBlanc was a French surgeon and chemist who discovered how to manufacture soda from common salt. The "Leblanc process" was key to making soap, glass and other products from soda ash.
    This made doing surgeries safer, and less likely for a person to get infected. He did this in 1790.
  • Eli Whitney

    Eli Whitney invented the Cotton gin, and patented it in 1794. This allowed for a quick and efficient way to clean cotton, created a boom in the cotton industry.
  • Robert Fulton

    Fulton came up with the idea of the submarine in 1797. This is very useful in war, and discovering things under the sea.
  • Alessandro Volta

    Volta was a pioneer in electrical science, and he created the first ever electric battery in 1800. People called it the "voltaic pile". Scientists were able to create steady flows of electrical current for the first time.
  • George Stephenson

    Stephenson constructed his first locomotive, 'Blucher', for hauling coal at Killingworth Colliery near Newcastle. In 1815, he invented a safety lamp for use in coalmines, nicknamed the 'Geordie'. Both inventions sped up the mining process, and made mining safer.
  • Elias Howe

    Howe patented the plans to the first ever sewing machine in 1846. Sued Isaac Singer for the rights in 1854. This increased the speed in which clothing could be made and sold.

    John Wesley
    He patented Celluloid in 1870, as a substitute for hard rubber in denture plates.
    This is a very useful invention that took work to help those who need dentures.
