  • Period: 581 to 618

    The Sui Dynasty

    589 China is reunited and Wendi created the three department system
    583 Wendi moved the captiol to the Chang’an building
    584-589 The Grand Canal was built from Chang’an to Tong pass.

    605 Yangdi continued building the Grand Canal from Luoyang to Huai River, then to Jiangdu on the Yangtze River
    607 Yangdi had over a million men repair and add portions to the Great Wall. They completed it in 20 days costing many lives
    608-609 The Grand Canal was built from the Yellow River to Beijing.
  • Period: 618 to 907

    The Tang Dynasty

    630taizong was the 1st emperpor to control the northen steppe
    635taizong welcomed Nestorian Christians and built a church
    630-645 Xuanzong traveled around collecting buddhist texts
    660Gaozong suffered a storke. Emperpor Wu gained power
    683Gaozong died Emperpor Wu held power becuase of sons
    690Emperpor Wu took over the throne
    705Emperpor Wu was forced out of power
    712-745Xuanzong ruled very skillfully
    745Xuanzong loved his son’s concubine
    755-763a rebellion started

  • Period: 960 to 1279

    The Song Dynasty

    1127 northern song was overun by nomadic groups, such as Jurchen from Manchuria.
    1210 mongols attacked northen frontiers.
    1215 mongols capture beijing.
    1232 Southern song teamed up with mongols to destory jin.
    1235-1279 song dynasty resisted the mongols. Explosives are used for the first time.
  • Period: 1276 to 1368

    The Yuan Dynasty

    1292 Kublai sent a fleet to Java to critize the leader, asserted mongol control.
    1274 and 1281 Kublai sent fleets against japan the 2nd atempt was aborted by typhoon’s destruction. The mongol rule was maintained throughout the military.
    1275-1295 The Venetian merchant Marco Polo traveled throughout Kublai’s realm.
    1315 The civil service examination was reinstated, but it required that half the degrees be awarded to Mongols and other non-Chinese regardless of their qualifications.
  • Period: 1368 to

    The Ming Dynasty

    1720 Qing army enters Lhasa
    1344 Taizu became a monk at the age of 16 and was sent from his monastery to beg
    1352 Taizu joined one of the rebel groups and gained command
    1368 Taizu gained control of Beijing.
    1405-1433 Under Yongle, seven expeditions were sent out under

    1624-1627 Struggles between Donglin scholars and the eunuch dictator Wei Zhongxian
    1644 Ming emperor commited suicide

    The Qing Dynasty

    1645 Chinese men are required to wear manchu harisyle
    1840-1842 Opium War ended with the Nanjing Treaty which gave Hong Kong to Great Britain.
    1850-1864 Taiping Rebellion was a peasant uprising in which a Christian convert called himself the son of heavan and tried to overthrow the dynasty
    1898 Guangxu Emperpor had tried to make needed reforms
    1900 Boxer Rebellion occurred
    1911 Qing dynasty was overthrown
    1884 Sino-French war
    1894 Sino-Japanese war
