  • The Chinese Primary School was created

    The Chinese Primary School was created
    In 1884 the Tape family sued the SF Board of Education for denying admission to a white primary public school. Tape v. Hurley was a case where Hurley argued the child was "filthy and vicious habits from infectious diseases" the court upheld justice, but instead of admitting the children into white schools, the board created a separate school for the Chinese. Later changed to Oriental School to admit the Japanese. (SFUSD, 2022)
  • Repeal of Chinese Exclusion Act

    Repeal of Chinese Exclusion Act
    Congress repeals Chinese Exclusion Act because of the Chinese being allies during World War II. This opened the door for Filipino and Asian-Indian immigrants trying to be admitted. Also in this year Yale Institute of Far Eastern Languages was founded, focusing on the teaching of Chinese Language and culture. (Milestones, 2022)
  • K.C. Li establishes the Li Foundation

    K.C. Li establishes the Li Foundation
    K.C. Li creates the Li Foundation that provides fellowships to Asian-American students. This was to promote friendly relations between the U.S. and China. Education was deemed suitable for achieving this goal. This led to more programs with academic institutions such as the Heritage Prize which is awarded to outstanding scholars and educators in the US.   • Second Wave of Chinese Immigrants

    Second Wave of Chinese Immigrants
    During 50s and 60s a second wave of immigrants came to America bringing with them intellectual capability and strong scientific background. On top of that most of their parents generation have already obtained doctoral degrees and were professors, doctors, and scientists. By 1979 the admission rate for Asians was up to 44 percent of all total Asian applicants. (Chang, 2003)
  • TEEACH

    TEEACH
    TEEACH (Teaching Equitable Asian American community History Act is passed in Illinois making that every public elementary and high school student learns about Asian Americans. This goes into effect with the 2022-23 school year. This helps with cross-cultural education we can help racial disparity at the educational level. (TEAACH, 2022)
