  • Opium War-Treaty of Nanjing

    Opium War-Treaty of Nanjing
    During the 1800s, the British sold opium to the Chinese, despite the Chinese telling them to stop. However, the British did not stop, and that led to the Opium War. Unfortunately, the Chinese lost to the British and were forced to sign the Treaty of Nanjing. The image that attached to this event shows Chinese and British powers signing the treaty of Nanjing after the Opium War.

  • Taiping Rebellion

    Taiping Rebellion
    The cause of the Taiping Rebellion was the loss of the Opium War and other nations around China being given more extraterrestrial rights. This rebellion entailed the Hong Kong Xiuqan trying to create peace throughout China. Unfortunately, it ultimately led to the deaths of twenty million people. The image below show one of the battles that took place in the Rebellion, and shows why the death toll was so high.
  • Commodore Perry Arrives In Japan

    Commodore Perry Arrives In Japan
    This was caused due to the Japanese refusing to trade with anyone. Along with him, Perry brought a letter from the president at that time, Millard Fillmore, which said that the U.S.A. wanted to trade with Japan. This resulted in a treaty between the two nations.
  • Treaty of Kangawa

    Treaty of Kangawa
    This event was caused by Western powers wanting to trade with Japan. Some countries like America brought powerful steam powered ships forcing the treaty. Foreign powers could then trade with Japan.
  • Sepoy Mutiny

    Sepoy Mutiny
    The Sepoy Mutiny occurred when the Muslims and Hindus in the British East India Company were angry about using weapons greased with animal fat and rebelled against the British. The two religions ultimately failed, mostly due to their religious differences, and the British were forced to put tighter constraints on the Sepoys.
  • End of Taiping Rebellion

  • Meiji Restoration

    Meiji Restoration
    This was caused by the Japanese being angry with the decisions made by the Shogun. They wanted the Emperor moved back into power. Under the reign of Mutsuhito, the Japanese were able to adapt Western culture and industrialize quickly.
  • Building of the Suez Canal

    Building of the Suez Canal
    The Egyptians built the Suez Canal in an attempt to modernize and not be overtaken by the changing times, similarly to the countries around them. Unfortunately, the Egyptians took a large loan from the British and found themselves unable to pay it back. Rather than demand the payment monetarily, the British took over Egypt, and the Suez Canal along with it.
  • Berlin Conference

    Berlin Conference
    This conference took place in Berlin, Germany and was made up of the major world powers. They discussed how to deal with colonizing Africa and which countries would get certain land.
  • Sino-Japanese War

    Sino-Japanese War
    This event was caused by the Chinese breaking their agreement of the Korea trading pact. Japan then attacked them. This had a negative impact on the Qing Dynasty and changed their trading rights.
  • Battle of Adwa

    Battle of Adwa
    The Battle of Adwa was when Ethiopia, led by Menelik II fought with Italy over possession of their country and won. This was an important event because it showed that African nations could stand up to European ones.
  • Open Door Policy

    Open Door Policy
    The cause of this policy was countries trying to enter China, which angered the USA, so they put the open door policy into action. This made China more available to other states. This stopped China from being colonized and preserved trading rights, but it left them to be destroyed by foreign powers. The image included with this event is a political cartoon depicting how the USA was the only country that held true entry to China.
  • Boxer Rebellion

    Boxer Rebellion
    The cause of this event was directly tied to the Open Door Policy, because the foreigners came into China to wreak havoc, the peasants were tired of the foreigners getting special treatment, and citizens were tired of China’s Open Door policy and wanted to change it. The peasants then created their own society and attempted to fight back. However, they were soon defeated by the government. The image that goes along with this photo depicts one of the more gruesome battles of the Rebellion.
  • End of the Boxer Rebellion

  • Russo-Japanese War

    Russo-Japanese War
    This was caused by Russia and Japan being the only major powers in Asia, and Russia refusing to leave. Russia also tried to occupy to Korea, which led to the two nations going to war. Japan won the war, drove Russia out of Korea and became a world power.
  • End of the Russo-Japanese War

  • China becomes Constitutional Monarchy

    China becomes Constitutional Monarchy
    China becoming a Constitutional Monarchy due to their momentum from the Boxer Rebellion, China's loss of power, and their nationalism. China changed their government hoping it would change their situation. Unfortunately, it did not work, and China experienced unrest for 40 years.
