  • Opium War (1839-1842)

    British sold Opium to chinese people. Government did not want the british to sell the drug. China made a blockade against England so the war started. The british destroyed the coasts of china so they made an agreement in 1842 (treaty of Nanjing).
  • The Tai Ping Rebellion (1850-1864)

    The government could not handle internal economic problems and this turned into a rebellion led by Hong Xiuquan. The rebels took control of cities by force and killing. European forces helped the government to stop the rebels.
  • Internal Crisis

    The emperor Guang Xu made a large number of new reforms to modernize China. But the conservatives did not wanted any change so the aunt of Guang rised against him and sent Guang to jail.
  • Open Door Policy

    John Hay, US secretary of state, had an idea of opening the trade of China to outside countries. This note was named Open Door Policy. Mainly to help dissolve the bubbles of trade in China and help their economy.
  • Boxer Rebellion

    A group of people or organization raised against the foreigners and Christian Chinese people. They killed many foreigners so the Europeans gather an army to stop this rebellion. They did so the government had to pay them, and this is when the Qing Dynasty was the weakest.
  • Sun Yat Sen and the Revolution of 1911.

    Sun Yat Sen was a leader in China that wanted a democracy. But he thought that China was not ready for it, so he divided the process in 3 stages. On 1911 a revolt occurred and the opportunity of a new government opened.
