  • Children's Bookstore Opened

    John Newbery opened a bookstore specifically for children. He published and sold children's books here.
  • Alice's Adventure in Wonderland

    Lewis Caroll's Alice's Adventure in Wonderland is published and then reprinted into English to be read around the world.
  • Heidi

    Johanna Spyri's book Heidi is published in Switzlerland.
  • Pinocchio

    Carlo Collodi's Pinocchio is first published in Italy, but is read by many children from England.
  • A Wonder Book for Boys and Girls

    Nathaniel Hawthorne's A Wonder Book for Boys and Girls is viewed as the first American book specifically written for children.
  • The Wonderful Adventures of Nils

    Selma Lagerlof's The Wonderful Adventures of Nils is published in Sweden.
  • Child Labor Laws

    Child Labor laws passed. This meant more children learned how to read and write. This lead to an increase in the amount of books being published and sold.
  • US Publishing House

    US Publishing house Macmillan launched an entire department dedicated to children's books.
  • 1920's & 30's

    Picture books begin to devlop more.
  • Award

    The John Newbery Award is established by the America Library Association.
  • 1922 & 1923

    Helen Dean Fish and May Massee become the first editors dedicated to children's books.
  • Children's Section

    May Massee opens a children's books department at Viking. Other publishers see this and continue the trend by opening more children's departments.
  • 1940's & 60's

    Young adult books become part of libraries, schools, homes, and publishing houses.
  • Children's Book Press

    Harriet Rohmer establishes Children's Book Press. Children's Book Press is solely for publications of bilingual picture books full of diversity and culture.
  • Books & People of Color

    By this time, a study found that many books that were being published rarely included people of color. They also found there were not many authors who were people of color.
  • Award

    The Michael L. Printz Award is established and administered by the American Library Association.
