These types of books were focused purely on instruction. Children were viewed as little adults. Originated in England. -
18th century - imagination is for children
1744 John Newbery opened up the first bookstore for children. His books taught children and nurtured a childs imagination. -
19th century - global publishing
Nathaniel Hawthorne is considered the first American Author for a book intended for children. Most books were coming from England. -
20th century- increase in production
Child labor laws were passed and many more children attended school. This led to an increase in book productions. By the 1920's modern picture books were being developed. -
21st century - diversity
Currently more diversity is being sought and wrote about. Internationally, books are being translated, characters have different sexual orientations and gender roles.
