    Cherokee Hardships

    Cherokee Hardships
    -Cherokee Indians thrived in their environment from their beginning to 1540 when Hernando DeSoto arrived.
    -The Spaniards demanded food as well as respect, and even took the Indians as slaves.
    -The Spaniards also brought disease, such as smallpox and measles, with them where 95 percent of them died within 150 years.

  • Cherokee Trade

    Cherokee Trade
    -Cherokee Indians traded with white Europeans in the early 17th century.
    -By the end of the 17th century, the Indians had constant contact with the Europeans.
    -Both sides engaged in peaceful trade until the smallpox epidemics and the Indians losing three-fourths of their land due to treaties.
    -Most of the land in Western North Carolina was lost to treaties.

  • Cherokee Trail of Tears

    Cherokee Trail of Tears
    -In the 18th century, Cherokee Indians were forced out of their homes in North Carolina, Georgia, and Tennessee to Oklahoma
    -This was known as the Trail of Tears
    -About 25-50% of Indians died en route from their homes to Oklahoma
    -More than 300 Indians hid in the mountains and escaped the government forcing them out of their homes. They hid until 1838, when they were officially recognized by the government.

  • Cherokee's in 21st Century

    Cherokee's in 21st Century
    -At the beginning of this century, Cherokee Indians survived on logging and farming as their source of income, but tourism became important later on.
    -The Cherokee Indians formed three organizations to preserve their culture.
    -In the 21st century, Cherokee Indians reaffirmed title to land, expanded voting rights, spoke their language, as well as improved their standard of living!
