US/World History- Beginning of Civil War
The north and the south did not agree with eachother whatsoever. They got in a war called the civil war. It involved the Union (North) vs. the confederates (South). The first attack took place at Fort Sumter. -
US/World History Event- Gettysburg Address
The Gettysburg Address was a well known speech president Abraham Lincoln gave during the civil war. The speech is famous because it talks about the principles of human equality from the declaration of independence in just two minutes. -
Law of Octaves
J.A.R. Newlands found in England that if the chemical elements are arranged according to increasing atomic weight, those with similar physical and chemical properties occur after each interval of seven elements. -
US/World History- President Lincoln Assassinated
President Lincoln was shot in the head by John Wilkes Booth during a theatrical performance on the night of April 14, 1865. Lincoln was 56 years old when he died. -
US/World History- Andrew Johnson Impeached
Andrew Johnson, the president at the time, was impeached in 1868. He was impeached because of conflict after the civil war. There was still politcal conflict going on even after the civil war. -
Mendeleev's Periodic Table
Dmitri Mendeleev published in Russia periodic table arranging the elements known at the time in order of relative atomic mass. -
Discovery of the Electron
J.J. Thomson discovered electrons in England using a cathode ray which emitted rays at the cathode, or negative terminal, in a discharge tube. He argued that the cathode ray consisted of small particles (electrons) but by using different cathode rays he realized that the particels were exsistent in all different types of matter. -
US/World History- Beginning of Spanish/American War
The Spanish-American War starting in 1898, was a conflict between the americans vs. the spanish. It ended Spanish colonial rules in America. It resulted in the US getting more territory that the spanish had "owned" before. -
Plum Pudding Model
J.J. Thomson made a model of an atom in England composed of electrons surrounded by positive charge to balance the electrons’ negative charge. Negatively-charged "plums" surrounded by positively-charged "pudding" hence the name Plum Pudding Model. -
US/World History- Great San Francisco Earthquake
On the morning of April 18, 1906 the world famous San Francisco earthquake started at 5:12 am. Around 3,000 people died after this horrible earthquake. 80% of San Francisco was destroyed as a result. -
US/World History- Titanic Disaster
The ship named the "Titanic" was an extravagant ship that was to take passangers to New York and to never sink, but on the night of April 14, 1912 the boat hit an iceberg. The iceberg tore the bottom of the ship into huge gashes. About 1,500 people lost their lives in this disaster. This iceberg was right in the middle of the North Atlantic Ocean. -
Moseley/Atomic Numbers
Henry Moseley observed the properties of x-rays from elements in the periodic table. He discovered that the wavelength of the x-rays became shorter as the atomic weight increased.
This meant that both the frequency and energy were increasing because of the inverse relationship between wavelength and frequency. By taking the square root of the frequency, Moseley found that the increase was constant from one element to the next. -
Rutherford's Gold Foil Experiment
Ernest Rutherford's Gold Foil Experiment proved the existance of a small massive center to atoms, which is now known as the nucleas of an atom, by shooting minute particles at a thin sheet of gold. It was found that a small percentage of the particles were deflected, while a majority passed through the sheet. This took place in England. -
US/World History- World War 1
More than 16 million people died after this great world war. This war lasted 4 years and involved Germany, United States, France, Russia, Italy, Japan, and Great Britian. The introduction of technology in warfare resulted in lots and lots of destruction. -
Bohr's Planetary Model of the Atom
The Bohr Model, created by Neil Bohr in Denmark, has an atom consisting of a small, positively-charged nucleus orbited by negatively-charged electrons. Sometimes people call this the Bohr-Rutherford Model of the Atom because it is a modification of Rutherford's original model. -
Discovery of the Proton
Ernest Rutherford knew that there must be a positive charge within the atom to balance the negative charge and create electrically neutral atom. He did many experiments which included transmuting one atom into another and each time hydrogen nuclei was emitted during the process. He discovered that the hygrogen nuclei that was being emitted was a neutron/neutrons. -
US/World History- Great Depression
The great depression was world wide following after World War II. Many people had lost their jobs and had no way to make any money. It lasted almost 10-20 years. The unemployment rate was the lowest it had ever been before. -
Dicovery of the Neutron
Scientists Bothe and Becker did an experiment consisting of bombarded the light metal beryllium with alpha particles and noticed that a very radiation was emitted. James and Rutherford assumed it was gamma rays but did another experiment letting the radiation hit a block of wax and it emitted protons. They knew that gamma rays were to energetic to knock the protons from the mass, so they knew it had to be something different, which was later learned to be neutrons. -
US/World History- Beginning of World War II
World War II involved many countries fighting against eachother for different reasons. It included the Italians vs. Americans, Japanese vs. Australians, and the Poles vs. Germans. The first attack was when Germany invaded Poland and all hell broke loose. -
Schrodinger Equation
The Schrödinger equation was made by Erwin Schrodinger in Austalia. It is a fundamental equation of physics for describing quantum mechanical behavior and describing how the wavefunction of a physical system evolves over time.
