1946 Governor's Race

Herman Talmadge
He served for the Georgia Senate for 10 years. Later he got elected for the U.S. Senate. -
Brown v. Board of Education
This allowed African Americans to attend public school with whites. It also created the saying "Separate but equal". All segregation was banned. -
1956 State Flag
The flag hurt African Americans, because half of it was the confederate flag. It is the state's most hated flag -
Sibley Commission
The governor had to decide to either shut down the schools or desegregate them. The legislative created the Sibley Committee. -

It was a mass movement of civil rights. It desegregated an entire community. -
Hamilton Holmes and Charlayne Hunter
Hamilton desegregated the university of Georgia. Also he was the first African American in the university. -
Ivan Allen Jr.
Ivan led Atlanta through rough racial times when he was mayor. He was in power through the Civil Rights Movement. He kept the city calm and peaceful. -
March on Washington
It was a march to declare freedom for all Americans. This is when the "I have a dream..." speech took place. -

This gives young African Americans a voice in the civil rights movement. This movement became more radical. -

This act allowed discrimination to go away and African Americans got more job opportunities. -

The Falcons is fifteenth football team in America. They are the first sports team in Atlanta. -
Atlanta Braves
The Braves went to Atlanta from Boston to play in the major league baseball season. It was the only sports team to call the South their home. -
Lester Maddox
This new governor brought dissatisfaction. He claimed that he would bring great resistance to segregation, but that never came to be. -
Atlanta Hawks
Their home is Atlanta. After the Hawks, Atlanta now has three sports teams. -
Martin Luther King Jr.
He was a key role in stopping segregation. He was the driving force for other African American to protest and revolt against segregation laws. After he soon got assassinated. -
Andrew Young
He was a politician, civil rights activist, and a businessman. He made Atlanta as an international city. -
Maynard Jackson Elected Mayor
First African American to be mayor in a big southern city. He also served 3 terms, after the terms he helped set up the 1996 Olympic Games. -
