1946 Governor's Race
Eugene Talmadge won the election for the Georgia Governor's position. He died unexpectedly before taking office. His son was appointed by the state Legislature to take his position, but the people who were anti-Talmadge wanted the new Lieutenant Governor, Melvin Thompson to become governor. In addition to that, the outgoing Governor, Ellis Arnall, decided he would not leave the office. The Supreme Court decided that Melvin Thompson was the Governor until a special election could be held. -

Herman Talmadge
He was Governor of Georgia for a short period of time after his father Eugene Talmadge, died before taking the Governor's position. He was a Democratic Senator until being defeated in 1980. He was anti- civil rights until the 1970's. -
Brown v Board of education
A Supreme Court ruling that stated that public schools could no longer segregate African American students from white students. It overturned the court case of Plessy vs Ferguson. Schools in the United States would now be integrated. -
1956 state flag
The proposed flag included the Confederate battle emblem to cover two thirds of the Georgia Flag. The change to the flag was to display resistance to desegregation of the schools and to show what the people of Georgia stood for. -
Sibley Commission
Sibley Commission was officially the General Assembly Committee on Schools. The commission was developed to gather information on the feelings of Georgia residents on desegregation of the schools. The commission advised the Governor to end the resistance against desegregating the schools. -
Student Non Violent Coordinating Committee
The committee was formed after a student sit in happened at Shaw University. Ella Baker helped organize the committee. The committee became a major Civil Rights organization of the 1960's. -
Hamilton Holmes and Charlayne Hunter

Charlayne Hunter became a professional journalist and Hamilton Holmes became an Orthopedic physician. -

This Act was proposed by John F Kennedy but was signed by Lyndon B Johnson after President Kennedy's assassination. The law made all public places available to all people and jobs could be taken by anyone no matter their skin color, religion, or country. -

He was an activist with the Civil Rights Movement and worked alongside Martin Luther King, Jr. He became the first African American elected to the US Congress from Georgia. Later he became the Mayor of Atlanta and helped bring the 1996 Summer Olympics to Atlanta. -
