  • United Nations Emergency Force (UNEF I)

    United Nations Emergency Force (UNEF I)
    The United Nations General Assembly created the United Nations Emergency Force (UNEF) to end the 1956 Suez Crisis. There missions were accomplished in these steps:
    -November/December 1956, UNEF forces helped the transition in the Suez Canal area when the British and French left.
    -December 1956-March 1957, The UNEF helped separated the Isreali and Egyptian forces and evacuated the Israeli from captured area.
    -Observed the borders to maintain the peace until May 1967.

    Opération des Nations unies au Congo ONUC (The United Organization in the Congo)
    After the Belgiant government granted independence to the Congo on June 30 1960 the Congolese troops rebelled against their white officers, refusing to recognize the authority of the new civilian governemnt. The new president of the Congo Patrice Lumumba, asked the United Nations for it's assistance to remove the remaining Belgian toops from the Congo. The UN had to help out with more than they bargened for though, they helped rebuild the government infrastructure.

    United Nations Temporary Executive Authority (UNTEA)/ United nations Secuirty Force in West New Guinea (UNSF)
    Indonesian claimed the Western New Guinea as its own while the Dutch claimed that its residents were not Indonesian and that the Netherlands would continue to administer the territory until it was capable of self-determination. Indonesia put paratroops onto Western New Guinea in 1961 which started a political crisis between the Netherlands and Indonesia. The Unted nations attempted to help te crisis by having the countries sign the New York Agreement in September 1962.
  • United Nations Peacekeeping Force in Cyprus (UNFICYP)

    United Nations Peacekeeping Force in Cyprus (UNFICYP)
    The United Nations sent a peacekeeping to Cyprus to help prevent a recurrening fighting between the Greek Cypriots and Turkish Cypriots, to maintenace and restore the law and order, also to help the country return to normal conditions.
  • UNEF II

    UNEF II
    After the Yom Kippur War/October War, the second United Nations Emergency Force (UNEF II) was established to supervise the ceasefire between Egypt and Isreal. After the agreements of January 18 1974 and Sept 4 1975 the UNEF II forces supervised the redeployment of Egyptian and Isreali forces. The UNEF II also manned and controled the buffer zones established under the agreements mentioned before.

    United Nations Disengagement Observer Force (UNDOF)
    The United Nations Disengagement Observer Force was established to implement Resolution 338, which called for an immediate ceasefire and implementation of United Nations Security Council Resolution 242.
  • United nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIIL)

    United nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIIL)
    The United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon was created to make sure that the Israeli's had withdrawn from Lebanon which Israel had invaded five days prior, restore international peace and security and to help the Government of Lebanon restore it's effective authority in the area.
  • Multinational Force and Observers (MFO)

    Multinational Force and Observers (MFO)
    The mission of the Multinational Force and Observers is to supervise the implementation of the security provisions of the Egyptian-Israeli Treaty of Peace and employ best efforts to prevent any violation of its terms.
  • United Nations Transition Assistance Group (UNTAG)

    United Nations Transition Assistance Group (UNTAG)
    UNTAG was a United Nations peacekeeping force deployed in Namibia to monitor the peace process and elections there. UNTAG deployed peacekeepers, military observers, police and political workers to Namibia to help keep the peace.

    United Nations Missino for the Referendum in Western Sahara (MINURSO)
    MINURSO was established as apart of the Settlement Plan which paved way for a ceasefire in a conflict between Morocco and the Polisario Front. Their mission was to monitor the ceasefire and to organize and conuct a referendum in accordance with the Settlement Plan

    The United Nations Protection Force was the first peacekeeping force in Croatia, Bosnia and Herzaegovina during the Yugoslav wars
  • United Nations Transitional Authority in Cambodia (UNTAC)

    United Nations Transitional Authority in Cambodia (UNTAC)
    The UNTAC was the first occasion where the UN had taken over the administration of an independent state, organized and run an election, had it's own radio station, jail and been responsible for promoting and safeguarding human rights at the national level.
  • United Nations Mission in Haiti (UNHIM)

    The United Nations Mission in Haiti was established by th United Nations Security Council under Resolution 867.
    The mission was reestablished in April 2004 when a rebllion took over most of Haiti and President Bertrand Aristide resigned.
  • United Nations Preventive Deployment Force (UNPREDEP)

    United Nations Preventive Deployment Force (UNPREDEP)
    The United nations Preventive Deployment Force was created to replace the United Nations Protection Force in the Republic of Macedonia. Tbe mission of UNPREDEP remained the same, to monitor and report any developments in the border area which could undermind confidence and stability in the country and threaten its territory.
  • United Nations Mission in Bosnia and Herzegovina (UNMIBH)

    The United Nations Mission in Bosnia and Herzegovina's mission according to their website is: "UNMIBH’s mandate is to contribute to the establishment of the rule of law in Bosnia and Herzegovina by assisting in reforming and restructuring the local police, assessing the functioning of the existing judicial system, and monitoring and auditing the performance of the police and others involved in the maintenance of law and order."

    United Nations Interim Administration Mission in Kosovo (UNMIK)
    The United Nations Interim Administration Mission in Kosovo's mission was to "help the Security Council achieve an overal objective, namely, to ensure conditions for a peaceful and normal life for all inhabitants of Kosovo and advance regional stablitily in the western Balkans."
  • International Force for East Timor

    International Force for East Timor
    The International Force for East Timor was a multinational peacekeeping taskforce mandated by the United Nation to address the humanitarian and security crisis which took place in East Timor from 1999-2000.
  • United Nations Mission in Sierra Leone (UNAMSIL)

    United Nations Mission in Sierra Leone (UNAMSIL)
    The United Nations Mission in Sierra Leone was to help with the implementation of the Lome Peace Accord, an agreement intended to end the Sierra Leonean civil war.
  • United Nations Transitional Administration in East Timor

    The United nations Transitional Administration in East Timor provided an interim civil adminstration and a peacekeeping mission in the territory of East Timor.
  • United Nations Organization Stabilization Mission in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (MONUSCO)

    United Nations Organization Stabilization Mission in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (MONUSCO)
    It was created by the United Nations Security Council to monitor the peace process of teh Second Congo war, though much of its focus subsequently turned to the Ituri conflic, the Kivu conflic and the Dongo conflict.
  • United Nations Mission in Ethiopia and Eritrea (UNMEE)

    United Nations Mission in Ethiopia and Eritrea (UNMEE)
    The United Nations Mission in Ethipoia and Eritrea montiored a ceasefire in the border war that began in 1998 between Ethipoia and Eritrea. THe mission was abandoned in July 2008.

    United Nations Stablilsation Mission in Haiti (UNSTAMIH)
    The United Nations Stablilsation Mission in Haiti is a peacekeeping mission to help assist the Haitian National Police in providing security within the country after the earthquake while American and Canadian military forces will distribute humanitarian aid and provide security for aid distribution.

    United Nations Mission in Sudan (UNMIS)
    The United Nations Security Council established the United Nations Mission in Sudan under Resolution 1590 in response to the signing of the COmprehensive Peace Agreement between the government of the Sudan and the Sudan People's Liberation Movement on January 9, 2005 in Nairobi Kenya.
  • African Union - United Nations Hybrid Operation in Darfur (UAMID)

    The African Union - United Nations Hybrid Operation in Darfur is a joint Afircan Uion and United Nations peacekeeping mission to bring stability to the war-torn Darfur region of Sudan while peace talks on a final settlement continue.
