  • University of Edinsburgh

Charles Darwin was transferred from his day school to the University of Edinsburgh with his brother and registers for medical classes. Here he meets Dr. Robert Gram, a Lamarackian and Naturalist, and examines marine animals. He is elected to the Plinian honor society of which they meet to discuss evolutionary science.
  • Admitted to Cambridge University

    Admitted to Cambridge University
Darwin begins his preliminary degree in Theological Training. He also attends botany classes, and studies Entomology and goes on tours around England and Wales with Frederick William Hope. In 1831 Darwin passes his BA examinations with honors. He receives a letter from Hope, asking him if he wants to join the HMS Beagle and travel to the Galapagos Islands to study science. They set sail December 27, 1831.

Charles Darwin and crew spend the next few years sailing to various islands. In 1834, they leave the Magellan Strait traveling to the west coasts of South America in 1834-1835. They also spend some time in New Zealand, Tahiti and explored the Archipelago. They finally arrive at their last stop, Azores in September.
  • HMS Beagle lands back home

The HMS Beagle finishes it's 5 and three quarter year voyage and lands back home in Falmouth, England. He then moves back to Cambridge in 1837, and begins publishing his research.
  • Zoology

    Zoology
Darwin publishes, The Zoology of the voyage of the beagle about the wildlife he observed on his voyage around the Galapagos Islands. From here until 1856 he writes and publishes many different books on his studies. He then starts to write his book on Natural Selection. https://charlesdarwinstheoryofevolutionx.weebly.com/timeline.html

Publishes, "On the Origin of Species by means of Natural Selection"
Darwin introduces the scientific theory that populations evolve over the course of generations through a process called, Natural Selection. His book was considered the foundation of evolutionary biology. His concept of evolutionary adaption through natural selection has now become the unifying concept of the life sciences and is still widely used today. Any species more suitable to it's environment would reproduce and pass on heritable traits to future generations creating new species.
  • Copley Medal

    Copley Medal
Charles Darwin was awarded the Copley Medal of the Royal Society in London, which is the highest honor in science. From 1864-1881 he publishes many more editions to his Origin book, and also writes about many other sciences including plants and mold. https://www.youtube.com/embed/T0B6os-6uuc

    Charles Darwin passes away
After 73 years of countless publications and contributions to science and the theory of evolution Charles Darwin passes away. It is believed that he possibly contracted a parasitic illness called, Chagas disease. If left untreated it can eventually cause cardiac damage. This ultimately led to his death from heart failure. https://www.history.com/news/what-killed-charles-darwin
