In 1831, Charles Darwin set out on his famous voyage aboard the HMS Beagle. This was the start of his research of evolution. He collected huge bones of extinct mammals that he studied which raised the question, why were these animals now extinct? Towards the end of the voyage Darwin was able to studied the Galapagos Islands. He noted that there were different variations of the same species of animal on the islands. It wasn't until the end of the voyage after he compiled all of his notes and findings that he proposed the question, were the differences between them natural or not? During this time, Darwin started to question the legality of God creating all beings. An ornithologist, John Gould, informed him that all of the birds he acquired from the Galapagos Islands were the same species of bird with different variations based on each island. He also developed his theory of natural selection from the Malthusian Poor Law, which was the restriction of breeding from the poor. This changed his thinking of animal life of always being stable.

In 1859, Charles Darwin published his work titled On The Origin Of Species, Or, The Preservation of Flavoured Races In The Struggle For Life. In the book, he described his belief of natural selection and that all life stemmed from a tree-like structure, instead of the previously thought linear one. He did not defend his research or findings himself though, instead Thomas Huxley did. Huxley defended Darwin's beliefs since most people thought he believed man evolved from apes.
