Charles Darwin: February 12, 1809-April 19, 1882

  • The Voyage of the Beagle 1831-1836

In 1831, Charles Darwin was invited to travel the world as the HMS Beagle's naturalist. The Beagle surveyed the South American coast for five years, freeing Darwin to visit different countries and islands, including the Galápagos. He collected thousands of specimens, which were shipped home for research, and filled notebooks with meticulous notes of the animals, plants, and geology. Darwin returned home in 1836. • Darwin's Theory on Coral Reefs and Atolls: 1842

After his five year voyage on the Beagle, Darwin proposed a theory of how isolated rings of coral reefs, known as atolls, formed. He suggested that they originally grew around extinct volcanoes which then sank into the sea, leaving the reef as an isolated circle. • The Theory of Evolution by Natural Selection: 1858

In 1858, Charles Darwin developed the Theory of Evolution by Natural Selection, otherwise known as Darwinism. Those that possess advantageous qualities, or adapted traits, are more likely to live and procreate. The adaptable qualities are subsequently passed on to the next generation by these people. These beneficial characteristics spread across the population over time. Sauer, Glenn. “Darwinism.” First Things (New York, N.Y.), no. 256, 2015, p. 12–.
  • On the Origin of Species: 1859

Darwin published his scientific literature called "On the Origin of Species on November 24, 1859. The book talks about the scientific theory that populations evolve over the course of time through the process of natural selection which he discovered the year prior. The book is considered to be the foundation of evolutionary biology. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UVx4Z3W6U-Y Francis, Keith. Charles Darwin and The Origin of Species. Greenwood Press, 2007.
