Charles Darwin contributed many amazing theories to science. One of the most known theories is his Theory of Evolution. Darwin went on a five year trip, by boat, in order to study different species. Darwin's voyage led him to the coasts of South Africa, where he only spent about 18 months on ship since most of his time was spent on the islands, studying the different species.

Darwin's eventually discovered fossils and started digging them up. He discovered large sized sloths, cow-sized armadillos, and rhinoceros. Darwin knew the fossils he discovered were a lot different than the species he had been seeing on his voyage. But what lead to the changes of these species and why were they so different?

Darwin's theory is also know was "survival of the fittest" or "decent with modification." Darwin's theory showed us that as time goes on, species adapt and became more sustainable to the life around them. All species needed to be able to adapt to their surroundings and be able to reproduce. Darwin explained noted that he saw several different types of mocking birds on his journey. These mockingbirds all had different features but were the same species.

Since Darwin did not know much about genetics, it is said that "he observed the pattern of evolution, but he didn't really know about the mechanism." Darwin's theory shows us that mutations are possible (at a genetic level, through observation) and this causes different evolutions of species.
