Charles Darwin Feb 12, 1809- Apr 19, 1882

  • Discovery of New Finch Species

Charles Darwin traveled to the Galapagos Islands aboard the HMS Beagle where he collected many specimens related to birds. Upon his return to London he discovered that all the birds were in fact different species of finches that had never been seen before. These finches underwent a type of evolution that according to PBS.org is called Adaptive Radiation. This basically means that they have all learned to survive in different settings and require different basic needs for survival.
  • Theory of Evolution

Darwin spent the years 1837-1845 doing research to thoroughly develop his theory of evolution properly. He wrote several articles on his research and findings throughout these years. Some of his work involved experiments in causing adaptations by creating an environment that would challenge the species then watching as they reproduced and adapted. Darwin’s theory of evolution is what he is most known for, having developed concepts that are still taught in schools to this day.
  • The Origin of Species

In 1859 Darwin published a book titled The Origin of Species. This book was when he first published the concept of Natural Selection for public viewing. It was a major step in his work in the field of Evolution. He worked on the theories in this book alongside Alfred Russell Wallace. The theory he established in this text was that as species reproduce, their young will be more equipped to manage the world they are born into.
  • The Descent of Man

The book title the Descent of Man, and Selection in Relation to Sex is among the controversial and well-known theories of evolution. In this work he addresses the idea that humans are descendants of apes. This is a well-known concept and one in which everybody usually has an opinion. Darwin theorized that the early humans prior to evolution would have been classified as primates. In this work he also discussed how adaptations could vary based upon gender as well.
