Birth of Darwin
Charles Darwin was born on February 12 1809 in Shrewsbury, Shropshire, England. His father's name was Robert Darwin who was a wealthy doctor and financier. Charles was the fifth of six child. -
Period: to
Medical School
On October 1825 Charles attended University of Edinburgh which was medical school for two year and that is where he gave his first scientific speech. He spoke on how he discovered that the larva of sea-mats were actually capable of swimming and that if you noticed black specks inside an oyster shell, they were actually skate leech eggs. He gave this speech at Plinian Society at the University at the age of 18 and by April of 1827, Darwin decided to quit medical school -
Period: to
University of Cambridge
After quitting medical school, Darwin's father enrolled him into Christ's College in 1827. That is where Charles became interested in studying bugs and in the year 1831 Charles takes a sea voyage. He became part of the Beagle Voyage, which included sailing to South America for him to conduct research on the species that lived there. -
South American Voyage
After a 5 year voyage to South America, Darwin returned home to express his findings to the Geological Society of London. He wrote in his paper that South America's landmass is rising and animals are adapting to this change. Darwin's theory was able to override Lyell's theory that animals can not adapt to this change but instead they die off and are replaced by new. -
Marriage- Emma Wedgewood
Darwin got married in 1839 to a woman who turned out to be his cousin. -
Evolution Theory
Darwin soon linked his findings from the South America trip that animals were able to adapt to change with the fact that the human species was able to adapt to the changes on earth. He believed that all species evolved from other. This allowed the species to survive as the environment changed and certain species were given certain genetic characteristics that allowed them to have a survival advantage over another. An example used was how humans were able to learn how to walk upright. -
Survival of the Fittest
The term survival of the fittest is the best way to describe Darwin's theory of evolution. The species that aren't able to adapt and evolve are preyed on by the stronger to survive -
The Origin of Species
Darwin's book on his theory of evolution was published in November of 1859. -
Medal
Darwin is awarded the Copley medal which is the highest medal awarded by the Royal Society of London -
Death of Charles
Charles Darwin died in 1882 and was buried at Westminster Abbey. His work still lives on til this day. -
