    Charles Darwin sets off as a naturalist for a scientific voyage to sail the world aboard the HMS Beagle in effort to study different aspects of science and the natural world. Darwin conducted multiple studies focusing on animals, plants and the natural earth.
  • Darwin returns

    Darwin returns to England. His research on natural selection during the voyage formed the basis of his work to come. He examined all the areas he visited, South America, the Galapagos Islands, Africa and islands in the Pacific Ocean and made detailed records of his observations.

    One of his greatest influences was the work of Sir Charles Lyell’s. Lyell explained a new way of looking at nature. He showed that small changes, over time, can cause large changes. He felt that natural and observable causes should be used to explain things that happen in nature.
    Darwin came to believe that Lyell was right. Darwin observed many of the natural phenomenon, like earthquakes, erosion and volcanoes. He came to believe that Lyell was right.
