Charles Darwin (B: 2/12/1809 - D: 4/19/1882)

  • Charles Goes to School

Darwin was sent from Medical School and was sent to the University of Cambridge to study theology. Throughout his time in school, he took an interest in Evolution, which attributed greatly to his discoveries later on in his education/life.
  • HMS Beagle Voyage

Darwin found himself on the Beagle as a naturalist. Throughout this journey, he found himself in the Galapagos Islands, where he was able to finalize his theory of evolution and coined Natural Selection. Evolution is a huge factor in the philosophy of science because it outlines the change. Change itself is one of the key concepts we learn with the scientific method, because we use it to define how change important to constantly improve and evolve with new ideas.
  • Natural Selection

Charles returned from his voyage and published his findings while in the Galapagos. Natural Selection is prominent in the philosophy of science because it outlines the principle of adaptation and how it ties in to what we know and do today, in scientific revolution with living organisms.
  • On the Origin of Species

His works were written and published which were considered to be a "turning point" in science and what we knew philosophically. "Natural selection can lead to speciation, where one species gives rise to a new and distinctly different species. It is one of the processes that drives evolution and helps to explain the diversity of life on Earth." (National Geographic).
