Charles Darwin

  • First Entry

Charles Darwin, born February 12, 1809, Shrewsbury, Shropshire, England—died April 19, 1882, Downe, Kent.
  • The Beagle Voyage

The circumnavigation of the globe at the age of 22 Darwin endured 5 years of physical and mental hardships that come with sailing the seas. A new seriousness resulted from these trials while looking for opportunities in the Brazilian jungles and the Andes Mountains. He could leave the ship for extended periods, pursuing his own interests. As a result, he spent only 18 months of the voyage aboard the ship.
  • The London Years

After his diary publication and rise in popularity, he also published a book called "Zoology of the Voyage of H.M.S. Beagle". Darwin devised his theory of evolution following the First Reform Act (1832), this was a time when people were rebelling against the church. He married his cousin Emma Wedgwood in 1839 and immediate after sharing his theory he knew he must camouflage his ideas. Charles believed in God and in 1839 he ended his last major evolution notebook with his theory largely complete.
  • On the Origin of Species

During this prosperous time in England, Darwin had now lost all faith in God after the loss of a daughter. Although his theory was now more widely accepted than before due to the progressive times. He had solved his last major problem, the forking of genera to produce evolutionary branches. After this discovery he wrote the book "On the Origin of Species by Means of Natural Selection...". This book did not bode well with his Cambridge fellows, however others loved it.
