Charles Darwin

  • Birth

    Charles Darwin is born at The Mount, Shrewsbury. Robert Waring Darwin and Susannah Wedgwood were his parents. He was the 5th child of his parents.
  • Published his theory of evolution

    In 1859, Charles Darwin published his theory known as the Theory of Evolution in a book titled "On the Origin of Species". The idea that is delivered is that throughout time a species will develop into a more suited version of itself. An example is the divergence of aquatic animals to land dwelling animals that could exploit the spoils of land. The term 'survival of the fittest' first appeared in the fifth edition of the book.
  • Charles Darwin Awarded the Copley Medal

    Darwin is awarded the Copley medal of the Royal Society. The award was for his works in "The Origin of Species". The material was still considered debatable so the actual title of the book was omitted from the award. The medal is awarded for sustained, outstanding achievements in any field of science.
  • The Descent of Man is published

    The Descent of Man is published. The book was created to answer and refine his Theory of Evolution that was challenged by many scholars.
  • Death

    Christmas of 1881 he had a minor heart attack on the steps of his Regent's Park, London. Following the heart attack he suffered a series of seizures. He died aged seventy-three.
