Period: to
HMS Beagle
Charles Darwin sailed around the world on the HMS Beagle. During his many stops he interacted with local populations, even taking up arms in a rebellion, as well as collected fossils, many of which were found to be from extinct animals, and observed wildlife. Additionally he witnessed the land "rise" as a result of volcanic eruptions. It was through these experiences and his vast notes that Darwin would begin to formulate his theory. -
The Galapagos Islands
Charles Darwin, aboard the HMS Beagle, arrived at the Galapagos Islands. It was here that he noticed that the mockingbirds differed on each of four islands. This observation was recorded and played the part of a stepping stone toward his theory formulation which would later create a paradigm shift within his field. -
Period: to
Theory Formulation
Upon the end of his voyage aboard the HMS Beagle, Charles Darwin worked on formulating his theory, although, it would not be published until many years later. He also continued to add to his notes by making observations regarding changes in species achieved through deliberate breeding. A major reason for the delay in publication was because Darwin knew the controversy that it would cause by going directly against the Church and its proclamation of creationism. -
On the Origin of Species Published
The first edition of On the Origin of Species was published on November 24, 1859. This publication affected the subject of Philosophy of Science due to biology's significantly different approach to science with evolutionary theory versus other subjects that relied heavily on paradigms involving chemistry and physics. Darwin, Charles, 1809-1882. On The Origin of Species by Means of Natural Selection, or Preservation of Favoured Races in the Struggle for Life. London :John Murray, 1859. -
Death
Charles Darwin passed away on April 18, 1882 in Downe, Kent, England, however, he left a long lasting legacy within the fields of biology and the philosophy of science.
