Charles Darwin started on the 'Beagle' voyage. Where he was sailing on the HMS Beagle where he spent 580 days at sea, 566 days at anchor, and 594 days on land. He departed from Davenport and was headed to the Canary Islands. He went to Argentina, Chile, Uruguay, Brazil, Australia, South Africa, Galapagos Islands and many other places. The Zoology of the Voyage of HMS Beagle
He considered asking the government for help in writing this in early 1837, but then in May of that year got supported by the Duke of Somerset, the President of the Linnean Society, the Earl of Derby, and professor William Whewell. The Origin of Species
This novel was to describe how he saw the different species of finches as well as the tortoises. The were very similar in look, but were very different.
