Charles Darwin

  • Early Life

Charles Robert Darwin was born February 12th, 1809, in Shrewsbury, England. He was the second son to Robert Darwin and Susannah Wedgwood. Due to his father being a doctor, when his mother died, he was cared for mainly by his three older sisters. As a young adult Darwin studied the classics at the Anglican Shrewsbury School from 1818 until 1825.His father shortly realized that he showed more interest in game shooting than in science, so she then sent him to study medicine at Edinburg University.
  • Voyage on HMS Beagle

The HMS Beagle, a warship, set sail in 1826 to explore the coastline of South America. After finishing his studies in early 1830, Darwin was invited to join the Beagle by one of his former professors. Darwin sailed aboard the HMS Beagle for five years on December 27th, 1831. The HMS Beagle sailed through Argentina, the Galapagos Islands, Tahiti, New Zealand, and back to South America. The voyage ended October 2nd, 1836.
  • The Beginning of Darwins Theory

During Darwin's voyage aboard the HMS Beagle, he studied many different animals, plants, and even volcanic rocks. After Darwin's voyage aboard the HMS Beagle, he began formulating his scientific theory in late 1837, early 1838. He did not officially publish his book On the Origin of Species until 1859, which expressed his thoughts and opinions on what he had seen during his time aboard the HMS Beagle that influenced modern day scientific theories.
  • Theory of Evolution

In 1859 Darwin released his publication of On the Origins of Species. His scientific theory was that evolution happens by natural selection. Different variations of characteristics show up in different species. Due to this, Darwin proposed that species with characteristics best suited to survive within their environment will likely avoid predators and disease.
