  • Charles Darwin's Early Life

    Charles Darwin was born on Feburary 12, 1809 in Shrewsbury, England. He was the son of Robert Darwin and Susannah Wedgwood. His mother died in when he was only eight years old and was taken care by his three older sisters. At 16 yeras old he was sent to study medicine at Edinburgh University, where he said he learned a little but it was a formative experience. One of Darwin's mentors was Robert Edmond Grant, who taught him about primitive marine invertebrates.

    Charles Darwin sailded around the world from 1831 to 1836.The voyage brought light to develop the theory of evolution throught natural selection. The ship that he used for sailing was called the HMS Beagle. At just 22, he set sail and spent a lot of time sailing around South America. While in South America, he collected bird specimen. The findings of the specimen helped him to devlope his theory. After his 5 year adventure, he returned to Falmouth, England on October 2, 1836.

    What was Charles Darwin's theory? His theory was about evolution. In his book, On the Origin of speices, he proposed that evolution occurs because of a "phenomenon called natural selection. (National Geographic, 2022.) The theory states that organisms produce more offspring than they can keep alive. The ones that survive are the ones who physically equipped and later on can mature and reproduce. You can think of it as "survival of the fittest."

    On the Origin of Species
    Published in 1859, On the Orgin of Society, brought about a revolution in a man's attitude toward's life and his place in the universe. The book summerizes the theory of natural selection. In the book he defends his his theory from criticism and presents good examples of natural selection. The book also talks how variations of species, the drive of natural selection and the creation of new species. Geographical isolation was a key componet.
