Birth of Charles Darwin*
Charles Darwin was born into a family of scientists in Shrwesbury, England. Susanna, Darwin's mother had six children among whom, Darwin was the youngest. Since his father was a medical doctor and his grandfather was a botanist, Darwin was raised in a well-to-do household. His family's wealth allowed him to get exposed to many different learning institutions and, to discover that he wanted to become a naturalist( Biography.com Editors). -
Battle of Waterloo
Napoleon Bonaparte and his military were conquered by the Duke of Wellington in the Battle of Waterloo on June 18th 1815. Napoleon's 72,000 men were in opposition to the 68,000 men led by Arthur Wellesley. Because so many conflicts going on, Napoleon's health worsened, which caused him to make poorly thought out choices(History.com Staff). -
Napoleon Bonaparte's Death
Napoleon Bonaparte was the leader of the french army. He was very successful until the battle of Waterloo which caused his success to start decreasing as well as his health. After the Battle of Waterloo Bonaparte was banished and sent to Saint Helena where he died on May 5th, 1821(History.com Staff). -
HMS Beagle Launch
On December 27,1831, when Charles Darwin was twenty-two years old the HMS Beagle began its voyage. This trip allowed Darwin to examine many plants and animals which he had never seen before. When he reached the Galapagos islands he was mesmerized by the thirteen different species of finches. With this discovery Charles Darwin eventually came up with his book The Origin of Species(Karp 31). -
Return to England in 1836
Charles Darwin returned to England in 1836. Upon his arrival he
analyzed and summarized his finding. These findings eventually became the building blocks for his book The Origin of Species(Biography.com Editors). -
Settling Down
After taking a mini vacation to feel the world around him. Darwin decided to wind down and spend time with his family. To do so he lived in the Down House which is located in England. This house has greenery all around it which helped Darwin stay around nature(Browne&Wyhe) -
Invention of Morse Code
Means of communication transformed on May 24th, 1844 .
Samuel Morse successfully transmitted his first message which started from Washington D.C and ended in Baltimore Maryland. This invention allowed many victories to take place in wars. The invention enabled information to be sent more efficiently and didn't take days or weeks to reach the desired destination(History.com Staff) -
The Origin of Species by Means of Natural Selection
In 1859 Charles Darwin published his book The Origin of Species by Means of Natural Selection for preservation of favored races in the struggle of life. This book theorized what Darwin had seen on his voyage on the HMS beagle. His book made many connection to the varied beaks of the finches that he found in the Galapagos islands. The book serves as identification of evolution in biology(Francis 12). -
2nd Edition Origin of Species
Darwin's second edition of The Origin of Species was published in 1860. His second book focuses more on the how evolution relates to or connects to man. His books also start becoming popular because they start getting adopted in other countries(The Descendant of Man). -
Lincoln nominated for President
On May 18th 1860 Abraham Lincoln was nominated for presidency. During the month of November in 1860 Lincoln received 40 percent of the popular vote which helped him in the long run. These situations led to his victory for presidency(History.com Staff). -
Awarded Copley Medal
The Copley medal was awarded to Charles Darwin in the month on November. The Royal Society of London decides who is worthy of this medal. For a scientist it serves as maximal honor(Browne&Wyhe). -
Beginning of the Civil War
On April 12th, 1865 the Civil War began. This event played quite a significant role in America because nearly 620,000 american soldiers died in this war. Not only did a massive amount of soldiers die, an enormous amount of american soldiers fought in this war 2,128458 to be exact(Civil War Facts). -
The Treaty of Russia
The Treaty of Russia was signed on March 30th, 1867, declaring Alaska a part of the United States. The treaty was signed by William Seward and Edouard de Stoeckl. Without this treaty America would only have 49 states(Treaty with Russia for the Purchase of Alaska). -
Darwin's Autobiography
During the year of 1976 Darwin knew his end was near. So to ensure that his children and grandchildren would know him, Darwin wrote an autobiographical memoir. He claimed that these short stories would interest his children/grandchildren and help them better get to know him(Browne&Wyhe). -
Awarded Honorary LLD
Charles Darwin was awarded the honorary doctorate of law award from Cambridge university on November 17th 1877. This award was given to him for making such an important discovery for mankind. Darwin would had received an award from Oxford University for honorary doctorate of civil law but he refused the award(Frith 235). -
Charles Darwin's Death
Charles Darwin took his last breathe in Westminister Abbey on April 19th, 1882. Darwin had started facing problems such as heartaches. He knew his life was coming to an end, so ever so often he would go sense the world around him especially the birds(Frith 236).
