Charles Darwin Birth
Charles Darwin was born on February 12th 1809 in Shrewsbury England. -
HMS Beagle
Charles Darwin began a 5 year voyage around the world. During his travels he spent time in the Galapagos Islands where, amongst other animals, he observed different species of finches and tortoises. The Galapagos Islands are not diverse in animal species as it is a secluded and harsh environment. It was here where Darwin began to theorize evolution, he noticed that the animals here were specially adapted to this unique environment. -
On the Origin of Species
Charles Darwin publishes his historical work on his theory explaining that organisms evolve as time goes on. The process by which these organisms change and develop is through a mechanism he called "natural selection" (Darwin). In natural selection, genetic mutations that benefit the lifeform tend to cause that organism to produce more offspring and further spread their genetic advantage. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UVx4Z3W6U-Y -
The Variation of Animals and Plants under Domestication
Charles Darwin used his previous work and empirically collected data to explain the variation of domesticated plants and animals. His theory was that the variations were due to conditions that were dissimilar to those of generations before them. His work here set a precedent for future projects. The process of a human selecting a sexual partner was similar to a breeder choosing the traits of their stock, from the viewpoint of passing genetics. -
The Descent of Man
The Descent of Man was a controversial Publication written by Darwin that applied the knowledge he acquired is his study of animals to humans. This started a paradigm shift that has since been the standard of understanding humanity. The book elaborated on his previous theories by including the addition of sexual selection. Darwin theorized that humans evolved from a common primitive ancestor and developed in part from our selection of sexual partners. -
