Charles Darwin was born February 14th, 1809 in Shrewsbury, Shropshire, England. His full name is Charles Robert Darwin. -
Attended College
Charles Darwin became a student of Christ's College, Cambridge in 1828 and graduated with a bachelor's degree in 1831. -
World Wide Trip
Charles Darwin was only 22 years old when he took a voyage around the world on a ship called the HMS Beagle. According to Frank Sulloway, “for five years the Beagle’s logs recorded, often on an hourly basis, where the ship was and what it was doing" (Sulloway). -
Galapagos Islands
During the months of September and October, the HMS Beagle stays on the shores of the Galapagos Islands. During this time, Charles Darwin observed many species. Some of the species were giant tortoises, iguanas, and the well known finches. -
Arrived Back Home
The HMS Beagle returned home October 2nd, 1836. Once Darwin was home, he looked over all of his observations. In his findings, he realized that at the Galapagos Islands, animals had changed and evolved from island to island (Ruse). Although Charles Darwin had made a breakthrough with this information, he did not present it right away. -
Released His Findings
In May of 1839, Charles Darwin released his book known as Voyage of the Beagle. This book contains the notes and journals made from his observations while he was traveling the world on the HMS Beagle. This was only the beginning to his major theory on evolution and natural selection. -

On the Origin of Species
On November 24th, 1859, Charles Darwin published his book On the Origin of Species. This book is about Darwin's theory of evolution. According to Michael Ruse, “organisms adapt and their adaptations or contrivances help in the struggle for existence" (Ruse). This quotation is a great representation of why evolution is important. -
Date of Death
On April 19th, 1882, Darwin passed away at the age of 73. Within the 73 years, he lived a very successful and adventurous life. His theory of evolution has changed science tremendously.
