Charles Darwin
Charles Darwin was born into a influential and very well off family on 12 February in 1809 in Shrewsbury, Shropshire. -
Theory of Evolution
Charles Darwin is most commonly known for his theory of evolution and his vast understanding and interest in the process of natural selection. He grew up in a family of scientists. His grandfather, Dr. Eramus Darwin, was a very famous botanist and his father, Dr. R.W. Darwin was a medical doctor for that time. From this background, he had a good start to his early education. -
The Galapagos Islands
Charles Darwin started college at the young age of sixteen. While Charles was attending Christ's college, he had his botany professor, John Stevens Henslow, take the role as his mentor. When Charles graduated in 1831, Henslow gave Charles the opportunity to snag a ticket on the HMS Beagle as a naturalist. Throughout his voyage, he collected many samples of animals and plants from many different South American islands. The most notable subjects came from the Galapagos Islands. -
Natural Selection
From his voyage, Charles Darwin became the scientist we know today. When he studied his animal and plant species, he started noticing the natural ways of their biology and chemistry. Along with that, the basic origins of all living creatures, including humans The most important discovery he made was the process of "natural selection". He explained this as creatures adapting and evolving to met their environmental changes. Those that didn't evolve to meet these changes died off. -
"Darwinism"
His theory became famously known as "Darwinism". He finally published his findings in one of his best works "on the Origin of Species by Means of Natural Selection". Many years after Charles Darwin passed, many other scientists took on his theory and studied it. The findings of DNA proved Darwin's theory. -
