    The Beagle Expedition

This was the second voyage of HMS Beagle. Darwin was brought on at 22 years of age to be a geologist and naturalist. Over the course of this journey, he became famous as a geologist and fossil collector. Darwin originally published "Voyage of the Beagle" as "Journal and remarks" in 1839. This was the third such publishing detailing the travels of the HMS Beagle. Marshall, H. S., & Darwin, C. (1952). Voyage of the “Beagle.” Kew Bulletin, 7(4), 506. https://doi.org/10.2307/4117803
  • Darwin found evidence that species evolve and are not static

Originally planning to write a geology book, Darwin spent most of his time with the HMS Beagle exploring the lands they visited. He found fossils of extinct mammals in Punta Alta, Argentina. He began detailing his findings of both fossils and living species of plants and animals. Based on these observations he determined that species evolve and are not static, as was the commonly accepted belief at the time.
  • Published "On the Origin of Species"

Charles Darwin contributed greatly to the philosophy of science by changing the way the world viewed species. He proposed that we had not just instantly become what we are today, as was greatly believed due to most religions, but instead, had evolved into it. His book was first published on 24 November 1859.
